West Trip Day 1 - Auburn to Iowa City

Alarm goes off. 5:15am. The day we have planned for 8 months is here. After a quick shower and breakfast we began our journey west. Packed the vehicle the night before so we could get an early start. I spent quite a while making sure that we were packed efficiently. Rather than grab our suitcases for each stop on the way, we each had an overnight bag packed with one change of clothing.

Heather drove the first part of the trip to Buffalo. I continued most of the way until we reached Joliet,Illinois. Switching again Heather took over the driving position. Continually switching like this really helped both of us stay sharp. After Heather drove for about an hour the weather took a turn for the worse. There was quite a bit of rain and we later heard there was flooding to the north. The rain eventually abated and we saw a beautiful sunset as we continued our push to the west. Our total mileage was 863 miles for the day. We spent the night at a Fairfield Inn in Iowa City, tired but really focused and prepared for some hard driving the next day. So far so good.
